Vintage Holmegaard Danish Blue Glass “Viking” Carafe, Scandinavian Wine Decanter Bottle with Viking King’s Head Seal, 1960s
This is a gorgeous light blue glass “Viking” Wine Carafe, designed by Ole Winther for Holmegaard of Denmark. During the 1960’s, Holmegaard added the embossed Viking medallion and put 5 color pieces into general production. The five colors offered were Cobalt Blue, Gold, Amber, Light Blue (like this one), and Smoke Gray. The “Viking” carafes continued in production until sometime around the mid 1970’s.
The carafes were machine blown, but they were designed with a coarse look to give them an old style, handmade glass appearance. To achieve the old look, bubbles and ripples were reproduced in the glass. An over-sized pour spout was hand-formed and applied to the rim of the carafe.
This carafe is really a beautiful piece; it is in excellent condition, no chips or cracks or stains. There are bubbles throughout and ripples of glass around the spout but these are part of the design. The 2 seams are noticeable on each side of the bottle.
Measures 9″ tall by 4-1/2″ in diameter at the widest point.
